Now that the weather is finally starting to get warm, its time to come out of hibernation and enjoy it. There is no better way then heading to the beach and having a relaxing day in the sun. Coney Island seems to be New York city's little getaway because it is so close to the city and yet its a very different atmosphere. You can take the N,Q,B,D trains down to Coney Island, so it makes getting there very easy. Coney Island has 3 main attractions that can appeal to almost anybody which are The amusement park, the beach, and the food.
The Amusement park (Luna Park):
Hours of Operation: From Easter to Memorial day its only open on Weekends from noon to early morning
From Memorial day to Labor day: Weekdays noon-late evening. Weekends noon-early morning
Labor Day to Halloween: Weekends noon-early morning
Their aren't specific hours of operations, it mainly depends on how the night is going and how the weather is that night.
Luna park is a huge attraction at Coney Island. There are about 50 attractions to go to and ride, and it is highly suggested that you go at night to really get the full effect of the park. The Amusement park is pretty expensive though, and it almost didn't make the cut to be on this blog because were all about saving money, but it has to be included in the conversation of Coney island. The best deal is the wristband that allows you to ride for 4 hours on any ride. However, make sure you plan out your trip before hand because you don't want to have to spend 2 of those hours in a line waiting to go on a ride. Tickets or credits are $1.00 a piece. Most rides take from 1 credit to 7 credits so beware.
The Beach:
Its hard to believe that a beach is only a subway ride away from a huge city like New York. Going to the beach is always a fun time and the best part about it is that its FREE. Hanging out on the beach or going swimming in the ocean is free, so why wouldn't you take advantage of the opportunity? Generally during the week the beach isn't very crowded, so if you get out of class early you should head on down.
THE FOOD:
Coney Island is home to some food that has been around for almost 100 years. Nathan's has been around since 1916 and is still going strong. They have an annual hot dog eating contest on July 4th and they have a countdown to it running year 'round. Its kind of a big deal. Along with Nathan's there are a ton of food concessions that are open right on the boardwalk. The food isn't priced too badly either, so us poor college students can afford some good food.
This sounds like a great family adventure!
